Jüsto, a digital supermarket with a presence in Mexico and some Latin American countries, continues to sell eggs from a cruel cage system that is already prohibited in some European countries and several states in the United States. The animal protection organization Mercy For Animals Latin America has launched a campaign to urge this supermarket to keep its word and publish a cage-free policy for its entire operations. In January 2022, at an entrepreneur event held in front of a large audience at the Four Points hotel in Mexico City, Marine Soret, Commercial Innovation Leader at Jüsto, announced that the company already has a commitment to transition to a 100% cage-free egg supply, and would publish its policy in this regard.
However, to date, Jüsto has not put this important animal welfare policy on its website to make it available to consumers and the general public for consultation and transparency. Furthermore, the supermarket refuses to make a transition that covers the entirety of its egg supply chain. A company that pursues fair trade should not condition and limit its animal welfare standards for chickens. More than 2,300 companies around the world have already committed to eliminating 100% of cages from their supply chains, including companies such as Cencosud Chile, Carrefour Brazil, Liverpool and Yema, among many others.
